Dear Members,

I am sorry to advise you that Mike Robinson will be leaving us at the end of January.  As many of you will be aware Mike’s grandson, Daniel, was diagnosed with bone cancer in the summer.  Mike and Heather have therefore understandably decided to move nearer to Newcastle in order to be closer to their family in this difficult time.  We wish them all well.

An advertisement for a replacement will appear shortly in the Independent, Examiner and Courier.

Dear Members,

I would just like to update you with a couple of recent changes.

Change of board membership

Geoff Hunt has indicated his wish to step down from the board because he has taken on a new position which is likely to take much of his time and attention. He was the board member responsible for house matters.

Martin Webb has very kindly volunteered to take responsibility for house and social matters. Indeed Martin is very enthusiastic about doing so and has a number of good ideas, particularly regarding ways in which we can generate income for the club and regenerate social life in the winter months. It is of course particularly helpful that Martin has a catering background and has experience of organising functions in the past.

The board has power to appoint a replacement director under the Articles and has done so. Martin will come up for re-election, as indeed will all the directors for the first year, at the next AGM. The board thanks Geoff for his help to date and his willingness to help out in an unofficial capacity in the future.

Responsibility for mixed non-qualifying competitions and social golf

Under the Club’s former structure the responsibility for social golf lay with the house committee. This was transferred to the Captain’s committee under the new structure and devolved to the competition secretary. The competition secretary’s role is a demanding one at the best of times.

The board have therefore decided to ask a group of three members – John Hewins, Bryan Waddington and Jan Sentence – to take responsibility for mixed non-qualifying competitions and for revitalising social golf. The three have very kindly agreed.

The few mixed qualifying competitions we have must be run under the auspices of the men’s and ladies’ competition secretaries, although the new group will be available to help.
